Puerto Ricans are already citizens of the USA. They elect a Governor just like in the 50 States. They have a non voting members in Congress. So lets make Puerto Rico a State. They will then have the full Rights and Priviledges as their follow American citizens. They can then vote for President.
Right-wing Conservatives and the Socialist movement would make Independence a disaster for Puerto Rico and a BIG HEADACHE for mainland USA AMERICANS.
How would you feel about having Puerto Rico in the Union?

I’m all for it. But I’m wondering if the people of Puerto Rico want this? I’m sure it needs to be their desire to do so, don’t you think?

Why become a state and be subjected to taxes? As you said, PR already has all the privileges.

Thats not the way it works, it is up to Puerto Rico, not the tyaranical government of the USA.

Make them a state or cut them loose.

I’m pretty sure the people of Puerto Rico are fairly divided on if they want to be a state or not.
Plus, as a DC resident who pay federal taxes (which Puerto Rico does not) and has no voting representation in Congress, I’m not super sympathetic. Residents of Puerto Rico have all of the benefits of being US citizens, but very few of the responsibilities.

Last time they were offered statehood i believe they voted it down.

Puerto Rico has regularly voted against statehood, and also against independence. The status as a “Commonwealth” gives Puerto Ricans almost all of the benefits of statehood without being subject to federal income taxes.
Independence for PR is usually only a topic among anti-American activists like Hugo Chavez (President of Venezela). Less than 5% of Puerto Ricans are in favor of independence.

It’s unlikely that the US Congress, which has the power to either make Puerto Rico a state or revoke its US territorial status altogether, will make any decision on the matter until Puerto Ricans themselves decide what they want.
There have been several referenda on the subject in Puerto Rico, and the vote has historically been divided fairly evenly along three lines. In fact, the three main political parties in Puerto Rico are also divided along these lines.
1/3 of Puerto Ricans desire statehood.
1/3 of Puerto Ricans desire the status quo.
1/3 of Puerto Ricans desire independence from the United States.
Until there is either a large swelling of support for either statehood or independence, the status quo tends to win by a small majority.

They don’t want that

first of all Puerto Rico is a colony of the U.S. and the american companies have established businesses in the country so why try making it apart of the U.S. when american coporations have already done that already.

What you ask is not up to the people of the United States. It is up to the people of Puerto Rico. It is in their constitution that we helped them write. The last time they voted was about 8 years ago. So your question should be directed to the people of Puerto Rico.

They’ve been offered statehood, but it’s been voted down.

They can vote to make themselves a state.
They do this each year and every year they become closer to becoming a state.

Some people in Puerto Rico are lazy they don’t whant to pay taxes or pay more they whant to be like that. I understand your point but they are like that. that is why they don’t whant to be a state.

“We, citizens of the USA, have no rights as to making Puerto Rico a State. I believe that in in fact only Puerto Rican residents, repeat, residents can vote once every ten years on the matter. So, what are the chances of that society voting to be subject to US Taxes when they have all our rights.privileges without doing so? The unintended consequences could include Immigants from any Country may opt to become a resident/citizens of Puerto Rico and then enter the USA as de facto citizens …hmmmmmm

If my memory serves me right, the Puerto Ricans don’t want to become a state.
