Sail the Caribbean Blue Waters Aboard a Cruise Liner

Are you planning for a vacation? Do you have ideas for cruising? If your answer to both the questions is in the positive, then do not think twice. Just select a Caribbean cruise as your vacation destination. Easy to reach and the charming islands make the Caribbean a place for tropical climate lovers. The diversity of cultures in the Caribbean extends to what other few destinations in the world can provide.

Almost all the sails to the Caribbean islands start from south Florida, which has many ports and can house large cruise ships. The state is also very near to the Caribbean. Some of the Caribbean cruises comprise South Florida and the Bahamas Islands because of the identical climate and similar attitude.

It is always advisable for you to confirm with your sail line and detect the packages offered by them. In reality the Caribbean stretches over an area of 2000 miles from Mexico in the northwest to the island of Barbados in the east. Thus it is obvious that almost all the cruise packages cover only part of the area. The Eastern Caribbean which covers the Smaller Antilles and Puerto Rico, the Southern Caribbean which covers the Dutch Antilles and the adjoining regions of South America, and the Western Caribbean which covers southeastern Mexico, Central America, and Jamaica are some of the usual cruise alternatives.

Needless to say each of the areas has its own attractions. The young travelers and the honeymooners like to visit the party environment of Jamaica, Cozumel or even Mexico. Those who want to relax in a calm atmosphere go in for Eastern Caribbean cruises. But do not forget to try the land expeditions because they would give you a memorable experience as well.

Once you arrive at your destination, settle for nothing less than a luxury Caribbean resort. Bask in the sun and enjoy your vacation in leisurely glory at Raffles Canouan Island Resort, while everything is provided for you.

Spanish Class, On Line Lessons Can Help You Learn Fast

Ah….the wonderful world of the Spanish language. What a joy it is to finally develop a conversational knowledge of this festive language. The thrill of speaking to someone in Spanish and actually understanding them and them understanding you! A large proportion of the world speaks this beautiful language and learning it can open up new possibilities.

Short of flying to Puerto Rico or Columbia or Spain you can get quite good training in this language on line. This is a reasonable way to go for most people. You can even join the many and abundant Spanish speaking communities on line and practice the new words and phrases that you have been studying.

Finding a good Spanish class on line is essential. You want to get the pronunciation right too. Often it is difficult to read a foreign word and know how to say it but this comes with practice and a little knowledge. Ideally some sort of interactional software or game can help a lot. Another idea is to learn a few Spanish language songs, and have the words translated into English which makes it easier to absorb certain phrases.

A friend of mine was learning Spanish and she committed to learning and understanding 10 new words a day. This took her about an hour a day. Within a few months she was doing quite well, and felt she could even at that early stage, get by on her knowledge. The key to this approach of course, is not forgetting yesterdays words, so practicing is also a priority.

Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS is Beginner-Friendly

Not only is the 200 series great for beginner’s, it is affordable. Targeted at the budget conscious buyer, the Nuvi 250 lacks all the slick bells and whistles, but it performs best at what it should – navigation. After all, that is what a global positioning system was intended to do. Some of the common specifications of the Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS are:

Pre-loaded NAVTEQ maps for the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. 3.5″ color touch display Turn-by-turn instructions Approximately 6 million Points of Interest Photo viewer Calculator World clock Currency and Unit converter

Here are some features that you might want, but the Garmin Nuvi 250 lacks:

Text to Speech Bluetooth Traffic Updates MP3 Player Headphone or Audio outlet

Here is what comes in the box when you buy the 250:

Nuvi 250 Windshield suction cup 12V cigarette lighter power adapter Dashboard disk for mounting Setup Guide

There are two main groups that provide mapping data: NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas. Fortunately for Nuvi fans, NAVTEQ is far superior to TeleAtlas. The bad news is that Garmin does not offer free map updates to its buyers. You will likely have to shell out over $100 to get a current map update for your GPS unit.

The routing engine in the Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS is also very solid. The routing engine is what helps make decisions in the route that it suggests to get from one point to another. This Garmin unit tested better than the TomTom ONE and the Magellan Maestro. This coupled with the excellent NAVTEQ mapping data provides a very solid performer at navigation tasks. Let’s also not forget the best part of the Nuvi 250 and that is its unrivaled ease of use. Your tech-challenged grandmother should be able to operate this GPS unit.

Puerto Rico 1940-50

Amiri Baraka Founded the Black Arts Movement In Poetry

Everett LeRoy Jones is better known as Amiri Baraka. Born in Newark, New Jersey on October 7, 1934, he had a relatively uneventful childhood despite growing up with overt racism and discrimination. He attended Rutgers University on a science scholarship, but later he gave that up to attend Howard University. In 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force without a degree.

While in the Air Force, Jones started writing while stationed at Puerto Rico. He was dishonorably discharged from the Air Force in 1957 when a fellow soldier found some communist-leaning writings of his.

After leaving the Air Force, LeRoi Jones moved to Greenwich Village and joined the Beat movement. He found some friends who were supportive and was published alongside Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. He married Hettie Cohen, a white woman, in 1958.

Jones matured as a poet and soon outgrew the Beats. He founded a community theater called Black Arts Repertory Theater/School in New York City. He went on to be influenced by Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams then developed his own unique style of poetics that fused Beat movements with free verse and Dadaism. He also became increasingly political and controversial during this time. He severed ties completely with the Beats and founded the Black Arts Movement.

In 1965, Jones divorced Hettie and left behind two daughters. A year later he married Sylvia Robinson, an African-American woman. She gave him five children. They both changed their names in 1968 to reflect their Muslim faith and Jones called himself Imamu Amiri Baraka. He later, upon becoming a Marxist, changed his name to Amiri Baraka.

Amiri Baraka has served as professor at Yale, George Washington University, and the State University of New York. He served as poet laureate of New Jersey and after September 11, 2001 he wrote a controversial poem titled “Somebody Blew Up America” that criticized racial prejudice in America and questioned Israeli involvement in the attacks. Labelled as anti-Semitic, he was removed from the position by former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey.

Besides being a well known poet, Amiri Baraka is the author of numerous plays and fiction, a large body of nonfiction and prose, and he has edited several volumes of literature. He is still writing today.

The Bermuda Triangle – Truths and Misconceptions

The area of the Atlantic Ocean labeled “The Bermuda Triangle” consists of a vast stretch of water roughly contained within the boundaries of a line from Miami, Florida to the island of Bermuda, south to Puerto Rico and back to the east coast of Florida. Within the last five hundred years there have developed many legends and much speculation that something highly mysterious occurs in this area of the Atlantic.

There are purely physical reasons that make this a hazardous region for land dwelling creatures to venture forth upon. The weather patterns in this area have several factors working to keep it in an ever-changing flux of conditions. The warm Gulf Stream passes back into the colder Atlantic waters along this area and the temperature differentials keep quick forming storms appearing. This area is also along the northern edge of the hurricane zone and is often swept by these massive summer storms.

Nestled within this area is the Sargasso Sea. This predominantly shallow region is surrounded and held in place by four major ocean currents, the Gulf Stream, the North Atlantic Current, the Canary Current and the North Atlantic Equatorial Current. This area contains not only the shallow areas of sea floor but also some of the deepest trenches in the Atlantic Ocean, thus generating even more hazardous ebbs and flows of these vast currents.

Within the clockwise swirl of this strong moving water grows vast fields of Sargassum seaweed. This algae plant roots itself to the ocean floor and utilizes air sacs to raise the upper fronds to the surface for photosynthesis. When first discovered by Portuguese sailors in the early 1500′s this plant life covered the area so thickly that sailing ships could hardly penetrate into it and if they did, found themselves often becalmed and stranded in it’s midst.

From the very beginning of European shipping to the North American continent this area has been both blessing and curse. Coming from Europe the sailing ships followed the westward blowing trade winds that ride the Equatorial Current and return utilizing the flow of the Gulf Stream back to Europe. Even now, with motorized vessels being the primary seagoing transport, this area is one of the most heavily traveled shipping lanes in the world. With the advent of air traffic a century ago, it has now become one of the most used air traffic lanes as well.

Yes there are more than the average number of accidents, deaths and disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle area than in most other parts of the oceans of our world. This should be expected rather than mystified since this area sees more traffic than any other shipping lane in the Atlantic. Couple this congestion with the seething variables of current, climate and weather conditions that are unique to the region and you have a ready-made recipe for disaster.
