Go on a Cruise For Your Next Vacation

One of the best things I love about going on a cruise vacation is the ability to get a taste of many different locations as opposed to just one place where you are there for an entire week.

Take for instance my recent cruise to the Southern Caribbean. We started out by flying from Philadelphia to San Juan, Puerto Rico. I was pleasantly surprised about San Juan. We were there a day and half before we sailed out, but San Juan is definitely a place I would go back to for an extended period of time. The weather was ninety degrees in January and the people at our hotel were great.

So we set sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise and our first stop was Aruba. On Aruba we took an off road Jeep excursion. It was pretty cool, but a bit pricey I thought, but what the heck I am on vacation right? Unfortunately for me the natural bridge had collapsed the previous year so I all I got to see was a pile of rubble. Although I liked Aruba I don’t think it would be a place I could spend a week at. My friends however absolutely loved it there, in fact that is where they honeymooned.

Our next stop was Curacao. We spent time at a marine aquatic preservation zoo type of thing. I forget the name of it off the top of my head; however it was a pretty awesome experience. You got to snorkel with all kinds of different marine life and with bucket of squid in hand you got to feed them as well.

If you were a little more adventurous you could feed the sharks and sea turtles that were fenced in on either side of you. It was a neat experience, definitely one I would recommend, but since our stay in Curacao was limited it is hard to say whether I would go back for a week or not.

Our final stop was on the island St. Thomas. There we took an overpriced taxi ride to Meaghan’s Bay where we paid $3.00 to sit on one of top ten ranked beaches in the world. Yes I can say it was extremely beautiful, but top ten? I’d have to see many other beaches around the world before I make my claim of top ten.

We were in St. Thomas for the entire day, but with the constant badgering by the locals to buy their crap it felt like we were there for a month. You would have to pay me a lot, and I mean a lot of money to go back for a week there. It’s just not worth the hassle. I do hear, however, that St. John’s is incredible, which is accessible from St. Thomas. So if I have to go back to St. Thomas I would probably head over to St. Johns instead.

Cruising gives you the ability to try out different locations before settling or taking a risk on one where you might be stuck having a bad time for seven days. If you haven’t gone on a cruise, I would highly recommend it.

Eastern Carribean Cruises

When it comes to cruising along the Eastern Caribbean seas, there are many choices, be they in the matter of cruise destinations, the kinds of packages on offer, and their durations. There are innumerable ports of call, encompassing all the major tourist hot spots, and also places that are off the beaten track. There are cruises to suit every pocket and there are cruises ranging from cozy weekend retreats to 10-15 day affairs.

An Eastern Caribbean cruise will take you to the American and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, St. Martin, and the Bahamas. December to April is the peak tourist season, when tourists from all around the globe flock here. However, you will get the best bargains during the lean season, during the summer and fall months. But there is a catch to it. The hurricane season is from June to November, and it is wise to avoid these parts of the world at this time. You would definitely not want to be marooned in your hotel room with a storm raging outside.

For short cruises, you can opt for Carnival and Disney, whose ships ply the whole year round but travel only to the Bahamas, while Royal Caribbean’s fleet has a three-night tour covering San Juan, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. However, the seven-night tours are the hugely popular ones. These will take you to Jost Van Dyke, San Juan, St. Martin, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Virgin Gorda. These are the traditional stops in a usual Eastern Caribbean cruise, but old-timers who would like to venture to offbeat places can opt for fleets that will ferry them to St. John, Norman Island and Water Island. The new kids on the block are Tortola and Dominican Republic with the upscale resort Caso de Campo. Rapidly finding favor with the tourists, these places are increasingly being covered by the cruise lines.

The Eastern Caribbean offers immense possibilities for exploration. The cruise lines, fuelled by tourist demand, are not averse to venturing into hitherto uncharted territories either. Thus, quaint, sleepy, tucked-away towns and villages are being unearthed and placed on the tourist map.

Things to Do on a Luxury Holiday to the Caribbean

The Caribbean is one of those places that you usually associate with beauty and elegance. The scene is quite exotic with all the tropical vegetation and the mighty open sea. Each island that comprises the Caribbean is unique – and yet equally charming in its own way. Needless to say, the beaches are numerous and very striking. The hotels in the area are a luxury unsurpassed.

Some of the famous hotels in the French Caribbean include Le Toiny, Eden Rock, Guanahani, and La Samanna. The Bahamas and Barbados should also be visited on your luxury Caribbean tour. In the Bahamas, you can experience true luxury at the Pink Salmon, Atlantis and One & Only Ocean Club.

In Barbados, you can enrol your children in the Barbados Sports Camp where they can learn to play cricket, football and netball while you relax on the heavenly beaches. The Bahamas offers a great option for those who seek thrills and excitement. Tourists can dive into the waters and swim with the sharks.

There are also more than twenty cruise lines currently in the Caribbean. Take one to experience the Caribbean from the sea. For a fun filled night out in the Caribbean, head to one of the many casinos in Puerto Rico and Bahamas.

Another special aspect of the Caribbean is its music. Caribbean music is heavily influenced by African, Indian and European music. The result is an absolutely divine rhythm. Caribbean music is also known outside the Caribbean islands and some of the famous genres are reggae, salsa, zouk and punta.

Along with some relaxation, everybody needs a little activity. The Caribbean islands provide a bit of each, making your holiday a complete and satisfying experience. There are many trails where you can go for a walk or hike along it. This is the best way to enjoy the natural beauty of the place. Explore the many impressive underground caves and cool off in an underground waterfall.

You may even travel around the Caribbean in special dug out canoes. While you are at it, you may also fish or hitch a camp. You may also want to try the guided horseback treks on the Caribbean mainland.

The Caribbean is also a great place to shop. You can find everything from local crafts to fashionable attire. Many towns and ports of Caribbean are duty free, which means that goods are available here at extremely cheap rates. It is also a great place to buy crystal and gold and silver jewellery. You can also find high quality diamonds, rubies and emeralds here. Many people like to bring back souvenirs of locally-made baskets, liqueur, honey and spices.

Eco-tourism is also increasing in the Caribbean. With such a beautiful landscape and plenty of birds, it is no wonder. The place is bursting with colour. Many kinds of exotic flowers such as orchids, hibiscus and passion flowers abound on the islands. Amidst the colourful flowers many birds roam including pink flamencos, ducks and spoonbills. Other Caribbean animals include dolphins, barracuda and jaguars.

The Stars Are Shining From Puerto Rico

Being Hollywood today is filled to the brim with various Spanish-speaking groups, from the Spaniards themselves to Mexicans to Argentineans to Cubans, it seems that the passionate aura they resonate on the big screen attract a certain mass appeal, not to mention their amazingly good looks that enthrall across the world. However, one such group that invaded Hollywood isn’t really a sovereign country itself but a part of the territory of the United States. And yet when it comes to acting, Puerto Rico represents itself well with such a wide array of talent that it truly is a world of its own.

Heading the list of the many current actors and actresses that proudly wave the Puerto Rican flag is none other than Hollywood superstar Benicio del Toro. He is the third Puerto Rican to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in “Traffic,” following the footsteps of such legends like Jos? Ferrer, Best Actor in “Cyrano de Bergerac,” and Rita Moreno, Best Supporting Actress in “West Side Story.” Del Toro also shone in such notable films like “The Usual Suspects,” playing the tongue-tied thief Fred Fenster, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” as the drug-laden attorney Dr. Gonzo, “21 Grams,” playing the ex-convict turned born-again Christian Jack Jordan, “Sin City,” as the abusive ex-boyfriend Jackie Boy, and “Che,” playing the iconic role of Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara.

Another notable Puerto Rican is the wily character actor Luis Guzm?n, who is usually identified by his thickset build and menacing expression, which have landed him in roles mostly as a sidekick, a policeman, or a thug. Some distinguished films he has done include “Carlito’s Way,” “Boogie Nights,” “Traffic” with del Toro, “Count of Monte Cristo,” “Anger Management,” and “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3.” Though being a typecast in some grim roles, Guzm?n has lately been seen on such lighthearted and mainstream roles, further widening his exposure to the world.

Other noteworthy actors and actresses that are from Puerto Rico or of Puerto Rican descent are Rosario Dawson of “Men in Black II” and “Seven Pounds,” Rick Gonzales of “The Rookie” and “Coach Carter,” John Leguizamo of “Spawn,” “Summer of Sam,” and the “Ice Age” movie series, Amaury Nolasco of “Transformers” and “2 Fast 2 Furious,” Michelle Rodriguez of “S.W.A.T.,” “Blue Crush” and “The Fast and The Furious,” Talisa Soto of “The Mambo Kings” and “Don Juan de Marco,” and Zoe Saldana of “Star Trek” and “Avatar.”

Then, of course, one could also not be remiss in including the power couple of Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, also chart-topping musical artists with such panache and style. Marc Anthony can be seen in such films like “Carlito’s Way” and “Man on Fire,” while J.Lo can best be seen in “Selena,” “Anaconda” and “Bordertown.” They have also shared the limelight in “El Cantante,” a biopic released in 2006.

With so much star power to offer, it’s no small wonder that Puerto Rico has been beaming with pride when it comes to Hollywood success stories that shine ever so brightly. And maybe it isn’t a big surprise that on the Puerto Rican flag, you can clearly see a single five-pointed star, which may somehow signify that honor.
