Turtle nesting sites all over the world are rapidly disappearing due to human encroachment onto the beaches where they nest every year and factors like sea pollution and trawlers that kill turtles in their nets.

Local predation by humans on turtles as a food source still occurs in many places but fortunately a conservation ethic is growing as the local population realises that ecotourism can be a valuable source of income and that it is in their best interest to protect the turtles rather than eat them.

The following are the top four places worldwide where you can still find sea turtles nesting in numbers large enough that the probability of viewing them is high…

1. Florida, USA

This is one of the best places in the world to see Loggerhead turtles nesting. One beach in south Florida is the scene of over 10 000 nesting Loggerheads each year and 80% of all the nests in the USA are found in Florida.

There are five different species of sea turtle swimming around and nesting in Florida so it’s an important area in their continued survival and even though strong efforts are being made to protect them the number of turtles nesting annually is still declining.

2. Bundaberg, Australia

Here the number of Loggerheads nesting is only around 300 but you have an excellent chance of seeing them because they are well protected at the Mon Repos turtle rookery. About 25 000 visit the rookery every year to watch turtles nesting and hatching. Beach access is controlled by means of a ticketing system which seems to work well.

Leatherback, Green and Flatback turtles also nest along the Bunderberg coastline but in much smaller numbers.

3. Costa Rica, Tortuguero

Tortuguero National Park is home to approximately 2500 Green sea turtles every year along a beach stretching for 22 miles.

The green sea turtle came very close to extinction here in the 1960′s when virtually all the nesting females were captured and ended up in turtle soup. As a result the National Park was founded in 1970 by the Costa Rican government working closely with the CCC turtle foundation. Researchers and park guards discourage poaching and the income earned from ecotourism helps sustain the local population around the reserve which encourages them to protect the turtles too.

4. Yucatan Coast, Mexico

Turtles in Mexico are found along the Yucat?n coast, in Baja Sur, on the Oaxaca coast, in Puerto Vallarta, and on Costa Alegre. The Kemps Ridley sea turtle is the most endangered of them all and the only major nesting site left in the world can be found at Rancho Nuevo in Mexico.

Puerto Rico is an island between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, located east of the Dominican Republic. The island is almost rectangular in shape and is the smallest and most eastern island of the Greater Antilles. Puerto Rico has a predominantly mountainous terrain. The coastal plains are spread across the north of the island. Sandy beaches cover the coastal areas. Cerro de Punta is the highest point at a height of 1,338m. San Juan is one of the biggest natural harbors.

Puerto Rico’s numerous small rivers and high central mountains ensure that the land is well watered. The south coast is relatively dry and the north consists of a fertile coastal belt.

Puerto Rico is close to the deepest submarine depression in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Puerto Rico Trench is about 1,750 km long and 100 km wide. The trench was formed by a series of faults in the north Caribbean and is partially filled with sediments. The trench is parallel to the northern coast of the island of Puerto Rico, lying about 120 km to the north. The deepest point in the Atlantic Ocean, the Milwaukee Depth, lies within the Puerto Rico Trench, at a depth of 8,380 meters, 160 km northwest of Puerto Rico.

Mona Puerto Rico – The Untouched Paradise

There is no other extraordinary wilderness escapade in the Caribbean than an expedition to Isla Mona in Puerto Rico, 80 km west of the main island, Pasaje de la Mona. While not many Puerto Ricans or tourists really ever take a trip to Isla Mona, this almost spherical island of 14,000 acres appears huge in a lot of people’s thoughts.

Also, there are Taino petroglyphs on cave walls, bats that eat fish, fierce goats and boars and the tales of enslaved Indians, dug in galleons that hold treasures of gold, remains of 18th century pirates discovered on Playa Pajaros, buried pirate loot and government-supported hunt for the same that finished suddenly when a member of the hunting team committed suicide.

Every detail is more than enough information when you are lounging around your camping ground under a starlit night and one that reminds you that a visit to Isla Mona could not be assumed on an impulse. As the Department of Natural Resources & Environment has an available toilet and saltwater showers at Playa Sardinera, Isla Mona is an outback camping experience and a boat ride could take over five hours in bumpy seas.

The police task force stationed at Playa Sardinera and greatly honors the Puerto Rican Flag, has an available basic first aid and has radio communication with the main island. However, further than this, you’re by yourself in these stunning but tough surroundings.

Places to Visit in Costa Rica

When it comes to places to visit in Costa Rica it’s difficult to know quite where to start. For example, Costa Rica is such a diverse country and so much of the country is aimed at tourists that there are so many things to do and so many places to visit in Costa Rica you probably couldn’t do it all in 6 months. I visited for a month the first time and barely managed to scrape the surface!

So the first thing to think about before you visit Costa Rica is in an ideal world – what would you like from your vacation?

Do you want to lie by a pool or on the beach? Do you want the action and adventure of zip lines, rock climbing and surfing? Do you want to see some Costa Rican nature – with all the plants and animals that comes with such a diverse place. Do you want to experience culture? Or do you want to see some amazing views? You can accomplish all of these things and more and frankly entire guide books have been written on the places to visit in Costa Rica so I could never hope to cover everything.

But perhaps I can just help draw your attention to a few particular highlights which will give you food for thought and may help to “kick start” your research before your trip.

Arenal Volcano – Yes, Arenal and nearby La Fortuna are a tourist trap so be aware of that before you go, but seeing Costa Rica’s largest active volcano is an experience no matter what your interests. You can stay in hotels where your room looks out at the perfect dome and at dusk a guide will take you deep into the park where you can see lava and red-hot rocks rolling down the outside of the volcano. The direction of the flow changes regularly so if you do want a hotel that you can see lava from, check which way it is flowing before booking.

Manual Antonio – One of a number of nature reserves, Manuel Antonio is not only the only place you’re likely to see squirrel monkeys in the whole of Costa Rica but it also has the most jaw droppingly beautiful beach. Also, because you have to pay to enter the National Park, the beach isn’t over-run with tourists generally so you can really enjoy it.

Monte Verde Cloud Forest – Ignore the Lonely Planet guide and go for Monte Verde rather than the rather dull (and badly run) Santa Elena park. Way up in the mountains Monte Verde is a challenge to get to, but is the most amazing experience to see clouds rolling though the forest infront of you. Wildlife abounds and the facilities are good. Toilets, guides and a restarant mean you can go wild in nature and then be back for a civilized lunch just a few hours later.

Tortuguero – An inland river system best reached by boat, take a guide out and you’ll likely see such wildlife as manatees and most amazing of all – wild turtles coming ashore to lay eggs. Different species next at different times of year but if you want the heart-stopping experience of seeing a wild turtle, this is one of the best places in the world.

Chirropo – Take the climb up to Costa Rica’s highest peak which will take a full day. Hot and tiring yes, but the summit due to it’s height has all sorts of animals and plants that you just won’t see anywhere else in Costa Rica. What’s more, the time and effort it takes to get to the top means only the most hardy individuals make it – so enjoy being able to seperate yourself from the “average” tourist who didn’t make it!
